Prince Edward Island is a market where everybody seems to know somebody who used you. That makes consistency your biggest digital asset: every customer remembered, every job documented, every finished customer asked for a review. We help PEI trades move from paper to systems that do that reliably. We're a marketing and business consulting service; we're not a contractor and don't do the trade work.
The PEI market for going digital
Most work clusters around Charlottetown and its neighbours Stratford and Cornwall, with Summerside to the west and Three Rivers to the east. Because drives are short by Canadian standards, the scheduling problem on the Island is squeezing everything into the busy months, not covering distance.
Many PEI trades are small, owner-run shops where one person quotes, schedules and invoices. For them, a phone-based CRM that handles customers, jobs and invoices in one app removes hours of evening paperwork. For slightly larger teams, it gives the office a shared view of who's where.
Seasonality and climate
PEI's maritime climate means cold, snowy winters softened somewhat by the Gulf of St. Lawrence. According to Statistics Canada's 2023 survey, heat pumps were the primary heating system in 36% of PEI households, while oil was the main energy for 28%, electricity for 18% and wood for 8%.
A large heat pump base is a large maintenance opportunity. Fall reminders from a CRM, sent to customers who've agreed to hear from you, can fill shoulder-season schedules. Exterior trades face a shorter season and benefit most from fast spring quoting.
Regulators to know
We link and summarize only; ask the province or your adviser about compliance.
- Inspection Services covers boilers and pressure vessels, electrical, elevators, plumbing and propane. PEI issues separate licences for plumbing contractors, mechanical contractors (for boiler and pressure vessel work, on a three-year cycle ending December 31, 2027), elevator contractors and LP gas personnel.
- The Workers Compensation Board of PEI handles workers' compensation.
- PEI Apprenticeship runs trade certification.
- PEI Consumer Protection covers consumer matters.
A licence renewal date is a good thing to track in your CRM as a task, so it never sneaks up on you.
Programs that affect your paperwork (as of October 2026)
PEI's rebate picture changed in 2026. The province's funding and rebates page shows efficiencyPEI's residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on April 15, 2026, though purchases made between April 15, 2025 and April 15, 2026 may still qualify within one year of purchase. The efficiencyPEI page states the Free Heat Pump Program is closed to applications. Under the federal affordability agreement announced in June 2026, the province is expanding free insulation for income-qualified homeowners.
For contractors, the lesson is simple: dated, itemized digital invoices help customers claim what they're still entitled to. Confirm current details with efficiencyPEI.
What a small island shop can do this week
You don't need new software to start. Spend an hour listing every customer you've served in the past two years, with phone, address and what you did. That list becomes the first import into a CRM, the first audience for maintenance reminders and the first batch of review requests. Most owners are surprised how long it is, and how many of those customers haven't heard from them since the job.
Once that list is in a system, tag each customer by what you did for them. Even three or four simple tags, such as heating, plumbing, renovation or exterior, make the next seasonal message relevant instead of generic.
How we'd approach a PEI trades business
- One app for everything for owner-run shops: customers, jobs, invoices.
- Install history recorded with dates and models.
- Licence renewal tasks in the CRM.
- Review requests to every finished customer, because on an island, reputation compounds; see review automation.

Frequently asked questions
Is digital booking useful on a small island market?
It can be, especially for maintenance and estimate visits. Customers still call, but a booking page captures the ones who'd rather not, and confirmations cut no-shows. Keep urgent work phone-only.
Why do purchase dates on invoices matter right now?
efficiencyPEI's residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on April 15, 2026, but purchases made in the year before that date may still qualify if claimed within one year of purchase. Clear, dated invoices help customers make those claims. Confirm details with efficiencyPEI.
Do we need separate licences recorded in our CRM?
It's useful. PEI has separate licences for plumbing contractors, mechanical contractors doing boiler and pressure vessel work, elevator contractors and LP gas personnel. Storing the right licence on each tech or company profile keeps quotes accurate.
